Ultrastructrual Study on the Age-Dependent Changes in the Human Peripheral Iris

Abstract
Ultrastructures of human peripheral iris were observed under the electron microscope, using 33 specimens obtained at cataract surgery from different-age groups ranging from 4 to 91. Morphological changes as in-
fluenced by aging were found in the melanin granules and nuclei of the melanocytes as well as blood vessels in the stromal tissues.
1. Melanosomes which were formed by lysis of melanin granules began to appear dramatically from forties and were followed by the increasing number of clump cells.
2. Nuclear bodies of various shapes were found from sixties, suggesting both decreasing functions of the nuclei and degeneration of the cells.
3. The older the age, the more obstructive changes of the vessel were found. Thus, the observed vascular
obstruction may induce age-dependent changes in melanoeyte such as melanin formation and nuclear alteration.
